The United States emerged convincing winners at the Women’s World Cup in Vancouver, on Sunday, beating the defending champions Japan 5-2.
Earlier, on 27.6.15, Japan defeated Australia’s 1-0 in a quarter-final.
Australia had held off a highly technical attack; the Japan side frustrated but sticking to the game plan, putting on a striker late in the game who scored three minutes before full-time.
Japan were holders of both the World Cup and Asian Cup.
The Matildas had got into the final eight in the twenty-four team tournament; initially 134 teams competed to qualify. Focus now shifts to the Olympic Games next year.
The victory of the American team, Stars and Stripes, was the first since 1999, and 1991, and once more took great strides towards consolidating the Beautiful Game in the United States.
“What a win for Team USA! Great game @CarliLloyd! Your country is so proud of all of you. Come visit the White House with the World Cup soon”, said President Barack Obama on social media.
The largest cable sports network had 25-million people watching the final, pushing the game to a place among leading contests in the United States.
England and Germany took up the third and fourth places in the 2015 World Cup.
