The French government committed to an immediate inspection and refurbishment program for rail-line installations after the crash of a train on Friday, with six people confirmed dead.
The regional service running from Paris to Limoges, carrying passenger traffic for the Bastille Day holiday weekend, came off the rails and crashed onto the platform at the town of Bretigny-sur-Onge.
The rail service, the SNCF, found that a metal component of a set of points had broken loose, indicating a likely cause.
President Francois Hollande attended at the scene; it was the country’s worst rail accident for 25 years.
