Britain’s National Portrait Gallery has put on show (11.1.13) the first official portrait of the former Kate Middleton as the Duchess of Cambridge.
Commissioned by the Gallery and painted by Paul Emsley, it follows the subject’s preference to be represented as a “natural†rather than “official†persona.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, 31, has been given the “Royal treatmentâ€, one way or another, since her marriage to the second-in-line, Prince William, on 29.4.11.
That includes public celebration of her birthday, (see EUAustralia Online, “Belfast trouble over flagâ€, 12.1.13), and vast media attention, not least the abundant celebration of her current pregnancy – intensely anticipated as it was in the women’s publishing world.
Some parts of the role would be onerous and hard-to-take, like the attentions of the paparazzi, and the tragic aftermath of the hoax call by two Australian broadcasters, to the hospital where she was a patient, (see EUAustralia Online, “Tragic outome of ‘Royal’ prank …â€, 11.12.12).
