daniel-rolf-dieter2.jpgNotes by Rebecca Cox on her encounter with Rolf-Dieter Daniel, a European man in Asia.

Living in Thailand for over 30 years, German born, Rolf-Dieter Daniel is an experienced businessman with links to many international companies, and his own strong ideas on topics like the Eurozone and effects of the debt crisis.

He is currently Managing Director of the quality manufacturing firm Staedtler Thailand, and President of the European – ASEAN Business Centre.

Additionally, Mr. Daniel is President of the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce, Board Trustee of the German Cultural Foundation, member of the Siam Society and Former President of the Rotary Club of Bangkok Srinakarin.

From Hamburg, Mr. Daniel studied at the university there completing a business administration degree, and after graduation spent nearly seven years with a leading travel group, affiliated with Hapag-Lloyd.

He decided then it was time for travel himself, to get international management experience, and made a decisive move that was to determine his future life – travelling independently to Thailand, where he started looking for a job.

After some training jobs, his break came, being appointed General Manager of Alucon, making aluminium packaging — before he was approached by Staedtler.

Opening a business for his new employers in Thailand had several challenges, beginning with compliance issues, as Thai  law requires 51% local ownership of enterprises.
Mr Daniel has been 21 years as managing director of the firm, and as he says, amongst many things, with stiff competition from China and elsewhere, he successfully “sells pencils”.

Mr. Daniel is married to Eumporn with two daughters.
