muller-christoph.jpgStrong performance by the Australian economy has encouraged ideas of  closer ties with Europe, according to Christoph Muller, the German Ambassador.

Dr Muller told the Australian Council for Europe, in Brisbane, 13.6.12, there was strong hope for the completion of a free trade agreement between Australia and the European Union.

“That should be possible, to put things where they belong”, he said.

He said figures on economic performance by Australia, such as growth in Gross Domestic Product registered this month, set it apart.

With the Euro crisis, where the joint EU currency was under pressure  — although overall still stronger than at its launch in 1999 – the healthy Australian dollar was being recognised as “something special.”

Relations between Australia and the European Union have been strengthened at a formal level over the last five years, with new agreements signed at Brussels by Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd, then Julia Gillard.

Further intensification, in trade and other areas, involves a long process of consultation with the 27 member state governments in Europe.
