Samantha Stosur, unblessed so far in European Grand Slam events, has won the US Open Tennis in New York (11.9.11), defeating Serena Williams in straight sets.
A frustrating lead-up to the victory – the first in a women’s Open for an Australian since Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s at Wimbledon in 1980 – included the unsuccessful 2010 French Open final against Francesca Schiavone, and fairly brusque eliminations from Wimbledon this year and last.

This time it was a copy-book win against a complaining opponent  – 6-2, 6-3 in 1 hour 23 minutes.
While paying tribute to Serena Williams for a great contribution to the sport, Samantha Stosur might have considered her own long journey, getting up to outstanding fitness and overcoming a hoodoo of faltering concentration at crucial moments – with the Grand Slam always in mind.
“It’s been a dream since I first knew what a Grand Slam wasâ€, she said.
“Thanks, I’m looking forward to going home.â€
