Japan’s women’s Football team held out against an American onslaught all through Sunday’s final, matching points 2-2 at the end of extra time, then winning the World Cup in a shoot-out.
Celebrations over the win against the favourites would offer some relief to the country hard hit by the twin natural disasters of earthquake and tsunami, and a nuclear accident still not put to rest.
Also from the Asian circuit, Australia’s Matilda’s played in the top eight of the tournament, in Germany; see EUAustralia Online, “Sports Updateâ€, 11.7.11.
