In Afghanistan, the hunt for the National Army soldier who shot dead an Australian on Monday has been unsuccessful, after three days.
The Afghan man shot Lance Corporal Andrew Gordon Jones, 25, at a patrol base North of the Australian headquarters at Tarin Kot.
Army spokesmen could not confirm reports that the gunman was a Taliban insurgent who had infiltrated the forces some months ago; he may have got away on a motorcycle.
A few hours after Lance Corporal Jones’s death, Lieutenant Marcus Sean Case, 27, was killed in the accidental crash of a Chinook helicopter, in Zabul province of Afghanistan.
Five other Australians were injured, all now reported to be recovering, in a satisfactory condition.
Both men who lost their lives were originally from Melbourne.
