cycling-track.jpegVisiting Australians have fared well, topping the Gold Medal tally, with eight wins at the world track cycling titles in the Netherlands.

The sprinter Anna Meares capped the performance with a win in the keirin event, and earlier on the last day of competition  (27.3.11) Cameron Meyer and Leigh Howard won the 50-kilometre Madison.

Most of the titles, fought out at Apeldoorn, were for Olympic events, which Anna Meares described as a “morale booster” ahead of the London Olympics next year.

It was Australian team’s best performance; its previous best in world titles was six Gold Medals.

France and Britain ran second and third overall this time.
