Exit polls in the Irish elections (25.2.11) showed the ruling Fianna Fail party will be removed from office, achieving little more than 15% of the vote, in a strong turn-out.
The Opposition Fine Gael, with some 36% would form the new government, on the figures; it’s been expected to go into a coalition with the Labour Party.
Counting is slow due to complexities of the proportional voting system used in Ireland.
The election was called a year early due to divisions in the former government, amid recriminations over its handling of the global financial crisis, and growing economic failure.
