love-parade-1.jpgAt least 18  people died with as many as 100 hurt, in a panic at a tunnel, at old railway yards, during the Love Parade techno festival in Duisburg on Saturday (24.7.10).

love-parade-2.jpgThe annual festival previously held in Berlin started in the era of peace-making in 1989, as the East-West borders were opening in Europe — part of the culture of huge gatherings for a party, set up without legal permits.

love-parade-3.jpg love-parade-4.jpgOn Saturday, as police tried to divert big crowds entering the venue at the former good handling site,  people were seen moving into the tunnel from both ends.

Eyewitnesses said there was a crush inside and several were hurt, or killed around an entrance to the tunnel.
Some estimates say that towards 1.4-million may have converged on Duisburg, in North Rhine – Westphalia state, which has some 5000 000 inhabitants in the city area.
