Francesca Schiavone (picture) has become Italy’s first-ever women’s Grand Slam winner, in the French Open tennis, in Paris (5.6.10).
She defeated Australia’s Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 7-6.
The Italian 17th seed in the tournament, aged 29, had never before got past the quarter-final stage in major Open tennis.
Samantha Stosur, 7th seed, had been a favourite to break a long drought in women’s Grand Slam events for Australia.
Margaret Smith Court won in Paris, for the fifth time, in 1973; Evonne Goolagong Cawley was the last Australian winner in a Grand Slam series, at Wimbledon in 1980.
