samsite23.jpgAt the French Open tennis, Samantha Stosur has become the first Australian to reach the final in a Grand Slam event for thirty years, defeating  the fourth seed , Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic, 6-1, 6-2, in an hour (3.6.10).

(The last was Evonne Goolagong-Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980).

The seventh-seeded Australian said later she’d had a “bit of a slower heart rate” during the match than her earlier, hard-fought victory against the American favourite Serena Williams.

Messages of support from home included a judgment from Margaret Court, Australia’s last winner in the French Open (1973), that she could now well take out Saturday’s final against the Italian, Francesca Schiavone.

“To hear that from someone like that is a real boost; overall I’m feeling very good; thanks everyone …”, Samantha Stosur said.

She has defeated Francesca Schiavone in four of their five previous clashes; while the 17th seeded Italian player is billed as a veteran able to capitalise on going through to the final, after the collapse of her opponent on Thursday, Russian Elena Dementieva, with an injury.

It’s an unexpected match for the show-down at Roland-Garros; good chance for a party shaping up in Australia.
