One of the 28 Australians in the road cycling classic, the Giro d’Italia (aka Tour of Italy), the relatively unknown Ritchie Porte, is having a turn wearing the overall leader’s pink jersey — after the race’s eleventh leg, from Lucera to L’Aquila (19.5.10).
He was 13th in the actual stage, fought out in wet weather, in which the top guns let a break-away group get off to the finish.
Mountain riding comes up in the next few days, not known to be a forte of the race leader, a twenty five year-old newcomer in professional ranks, from Hadspen in Tasmania.
The race finishes at Verona of 30.5.10
