Familiar Australian faces, Formula One racing driver Mark Webber (right) and cyclist Cadel Evans (in action), each chalked up a win in European events on Sunday (9.5.10).
Mark Webber, driving for red Bull, won the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona, having started in pole position. It was his third win for the current season. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was second.
Cadel Evans, world champion in road cycling and twice runner-up in the Tour de France, emerged after the second leg of the Tour of Italy as race leader — sporting a pink jersey for that honour.
The stage which finished at Utrecht, (destination Italy, in due course), was won by the American rider Tyler Farrar, who’s one second behind the race leader.
On the margins of that work of Australian titans, it has to be mentioned from the sporting calendar that the day also saw Chelsea win the English Premier League competition, at London’s Stamford Bridge — steam-rolling hapless Wigan 7-0. It was Chelsea’s fourth premiership in that top Football competition; Manchester United, victors for the last three years, are second this time.
