New EU Pacific Cooperation

tahiti1.jpgThe European Union and partner countries in the Pacific region have finalised arrangements for three regional development aid projects attracting a total of €22-million (A$32.8-million; 10.3.10) from Europe.

The projects under the EU’s African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) program are aimed at promoting sustainable management and use of marine resources in the pacific.

They are:

Scientific Support for the Management of Coastal and Oceanic Fisheries in the Pacific Islands Regions, for conservation and sustainable use of coastal and fisheries resources;

Development of Sustainable Tuna Fisheries, aiming to assist with poverty alleviation in the Pacific;

Deep Sea Minerals in the Pacific Islands Region, a scheme to strengthen Pacific planning and management systems for deep-sea minerals.
