It’s been a great night for the backpackers up from London to see the national premiers, Melbourne Storm, defeat their England counterparts, Leeds Rhinos, at the Elland Road stadium.
The now annual stand-off for the World Cup Challenge saw a close game this time, 4-4 at half-time, in slippery conditions, with a gaggle of players involved in one serious on-field tussle, and the home side lamenting three disallowed tries.
The premiers’ competition started in 1976 with the Roosters defeating St Helen’s 25-2; recent years seeing much more even scores: 2009 Manly 28 – Leeds 20; 2008 Leeds 11 – Storm 4 (a score to be settled this time); and in 2007 St Helens 18 – Broncos 14, (see EUAustralia, “… More than a round-ball realmâ€, 25.2.07).
