There are fears that the death toll from sudden floods on Madeira could go up sharply, with still over 30 people reported missing, and 42 confirmed dead.
The island’s capital was inundated after very heavy rain on Saturday (20.2.10), with violent torrents sweeping away cars, and people, and damaging buildings.
Portugal’s Madeira Island group, in the Atlantic Ocean South-west of Spain, has a dry sub-tropical, not torrid climate but has experienced sudden downpours in the past — most recently in 1993 when eight died.
