brussels-trains.jpgMore than eighteen people have died with several others severely injured, in Monday’s (15.2.10) peak hour train crash at Brussels.

Two passenger trains collided head-on at about 08:30, in bitterly cold and snowy conditions, at Halle in the city’s South-western outskirts.

It’s being called the worst disaster for decades, and despite the rapid arrival of fleets of ambulances, victims were trapped inside wreckage for hours.

“We don’t do ratings,” said the railways spokesperson Marc de Scheemaacher.

“But it is a very sad day.”

Local media have carried reports of a train in the city’s busy and highly functional transport system running late and going through a red light – with no confirmation before investigations take place.
