edinburgh-high-court-resize.jpgTwo more “backpacker nightmare” stories for Australian families have been  unfolding, in Greece, and in Scotland… updated 22.1.10.

In Greece, a nightclub bouncer, Marios Antonopolous, has been sentenced to 22.5 years gaol, in a Lesbos court, 21.1.10, for the killing of  Doujon Zammit, 20, of Sydney.

The young man died in 2008 after he and two other Australian tourists were attacked  by staff of a nightclub called the Tropicana on Mykonos Island.

There have been reports that they thought the Australians were involved in the theft of a handbag, and after a confrontation, chased them.

The court reduced a murder charge against Antonopolous to fatal assault, locking in the conviction and stiff sentence.

He has been kept in custody while making an appeal.
His two associates were given sentences of 7.5 and 8.5 years, and have been let free during appeals.

Mr Zammit’s parents, Oliver and Rosemary, have become popular figures in  Greek media since signing over their son’s remains for an organ transplant program.

In Scotland a Polish man aged 23 has been gaoled for the rape and murder of a young Australian woman in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh High Court (picture) determined he was mentally unbalanced, a psychopath, and placed him under a lifetime restriction order, of at least ten years.

The offender and an accomplice  – who has since committed suicide –  waylaid their victim, a beautician, aged 24, in a busy street last February, taking her to a campsite where she was assaulted repeatedly while they tried to get access to her bank account
