Meanwhile David Daly the new EU representative has arrived in Australia.

For David Daly it was a transition from the Emerald Isle to a big hot island.

david-daly.JPGMr Daly, his wife Aideen and three children were received by the current sensational heatwave conditions in South-eastern Australia as he flew in to become Head of the European Commission Delegation to Australia and New Zealand.

Following his return from a posting to Budapest in 2000 Mr Daly was responsible for policy towards Albania, Bosnia and Herzogovina, Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia until 2005.

Until December 2008, David was the Head of the negotiating team for Croatia’s accession to the EU and also acting Director covering Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey at the time of his appointment.

He is a career diplomat, commencing his career with the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ireland, serving in Dublin and India. He joined the European Commission in 1989. Mr Daly will present his credentials in Australia on 10 February, and in New Zealand on 17 February.
