Curing world hunger has never been so easy.
All you have to do is guess what a word means… and voila!! You’ve donated 20 grains of rice to starving people over the world.
Freerice.com is behind the game that’s trying to help end world hunger…
But where does the rice go and how does it get to the starving people?
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) distributes the rice by working with over 1000 organisations in 75 countries.
The site, which launched last October has now donated over 20 billion grains of rice, up from 18 billion in February… and its increasing.
But it’s not the only internet site with this novel idea, The Hunger Site does a similar thing, in a different way.
Here you can click on a link that says “Click here to give, It’s FREE”, and sponsors of the site donate 1.1 cups of food to the hungry.
This site is affiliated with two large charities, Mercy Corps and America’s Second Harvest- The Nation’s Food Bank Network, which provide food and resources to people suffering from hunger, oppression and poverty in the United States and around the world.
They say 100% of sponsor money goes to charity.
Meanwhile, yesterday (4.3.08) the actress Drew Barrymore donated more than $US1 million to help fight world hunger.
Her donation is also going to the WFP.
The WFP, a UN body, delivers millions of tonnes of food to more than 70 million people in some 80 countries each year.
