Large parts of Bulgaria and Romania are under a heavy blanket of snow after Thursday’s (3.1.08) paralysing storm that put some areas under a state of emergency and brought dangerous conditions at sea.
At least four sailors died when a Bulgarian cargo ship foundered in the Azov Sea between the Ukraine and Russia.
Sea ports including the large one at Constanta in Romania were closed, and electricity to more than 300 Bulgarian towns and villages was cut.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in North-eastern Bulgaria.
Road transport was cut in Romania and crowds were stranded at airports shut down by the storm.
Temperatures fell to minus-20 C with snow drifts two metres deep.
The impact of the storm extended across Europe bringing bad weather as far away as Sweden.
