Tuesday marks the beginning of the “European Year for Intercultural Dialogue”, a chance for promoters of the “European project” to publicise the idea of a cultural as well as political union.
Sponsors of the program for 2008, in the European Parliament and Council, declared it would help to “raise the awareness of European citizens, and all those living in the European Union, of the importance of developing active European civic participation which is open to the world, respectful of cultural diversity and based on common values.”
They have ear-marked €10-million (A$16.8-million; dcerates.com, 31.12.07) for actions that include young people’s events, and support for some major festivals and sporting contests. Academics, writers, artists and journalists from many European countries will gather in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana for a congress on multiculturalism and for the official launch of the program, on 8.1.08.
