Well over 55 000 Australians away from home have not escaped campaigning for the federal election set for 24.11.07 with supporters of the major parties canvassing hard.
Prime Minister John Howard’s Liberal Party has been trailing in the polls but Australian media have found some comfort for him in a survey of 1200 European centre-right adherents, conducted by the British Conservative Party. Some 53% reportedly voted him best leader from among their own, ahead of France’s Nicolas Sarkozy on 19% and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 10% — with President George Bush and Stephen Harper from Canada still further back.
Polling stations are being set up at Australian embassies in 20 European countries. The voting starts on Tuesday next week (13.11.07) or electors can send in a postal vote.
