greek-fire.jpgThe new outbreak of forest fires in Greece has taken a nasty turn with fifty people reported killed over the weekend.

Fire fighters used water bombing aircraft in many areas, with fires burning in the South of the country, on Greek islands and close to Athens.

The wild fires have got into parts of towns and villages, causing thousands to evacuate to safer ground or board ferries leaving their island homes.

There were fears on Sunday (26.8.07) that a fire would go through the ruins of the ancient home of the Olympic Games – the city of Olympia.

Government authorities in Greece say many of the fires were deliberately lit.
