discovery-channel-team.jpgIn the wake of this year’s sometimes compromised Tour de France, the triumphant Discovery Channel team said (11.8.07) it would disband at the end of this year — citing problems getting sponsorship amid doping scandals in world cycling.

The team was previously backed by the US Postal Service, then the Discovery television service, now withdrawing from cycling.

Led for seven years by the US champion Lance Armstrong it dominated professional road racing at the Tour de France; this year two of its members Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer, came first and third in the classic event.

Australia’s Cadel Evans was placed second.
