americas-cup-reduced.jpgThe defending yacht Alinghi won the best-of-nine series (3.7.07) to hold onto the America’s Cup, with a one-second win in the seventh race — defeating Team New Zealand five races to two.New Zealanders may have been slightly confused to find their countryman Brad Butterworth at the helm of Alighni, supported by a Swiss syndicate.

He said the one-second win, holding off a dramatic chase by Team New Zealand, was “very important”.

In the race, Alinghi lost ground after breaking a spinnaker pole, and the New Zealand yacht conceded time making a penalty turn.

The series for the oldest cup in yachting, actually all sports history took place off Valencia, in Spain.
