americas-cup-reduced.jpgThe defending Swiss yacht Alinghi took the best-of-nine America’s Cup series to match point, 4-2, on the weekend (30.6.07) with victory number four against Team New Zealand – but then, thanks to weather, had to wait three days for the decider.

Offiicials scotched race seven on Sunday because of extremely light air, and Monday was a scheduled lay day.

Much of the series has been sailed in fairly flukey conditions but good winds around fifteen knots were being forecast for this week.

Members of the Alinghi team were understandably ready to continue with high expectations.

The New Zealanders could recall the first time the America’s Cup changed hands, when Australia 2 held on and won the series in the last race.

A protest by New Zealand after the fourth race, about sail rigging on Alinghi, was unsuccessful.

The series for the oldest cup in yachting, actually all sports history is taking place off Valencia, in Spain.

The match table kept up to date here *:

Alinghi – Switzerland 4
Team New Zealand 2
