wolfowicz.jpgThe European Commission has had some words of praise for Paul Wolfowicz following the announcement he would resign as President of the World Bank at the end of next month.

It said that under his leadership since 2005 the bank’s working relationship with the European Union had had increased in intensity and quality for the benefit of developing countries – especially in Africa.

The Commission said a replacement should be found soon because a stable and strong political leadership at the top was important.

The former Bush Administration executive had been under pressure to resign from several quarters including European representatives at the World Bank, after complaints that he abused his office to advance the career of a girlfriend on staff.
