The BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston disappeared, believed kidnapped, three weeks ago – Monday 12 March 2007.
There has been no word from Alan Johnston, despite numerous public appeals on his behalf from many quarters.
As a journalist he is known to have been always respectful towards communities in which he worked; when he disappeared Palestinian journalists were the first to demonstrate in public, demanding his safe release.
Attacks on journalists have become common internationally.
They are suffering more, along with non-combatants generally, as violent conflict becomes more indiscriminate.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which keeps records on journalists harmed or killed, currently has notices posted on cases in eight countries, where journalists have been attacked, threatened or detained.
