fishing-lobster_traps.jpgThe vulnerability of fish farms to devastating pollution and disease outbreaks, with equally hazardous effects on surrounding areas, has been recognised in an upgrading of controls on European aquaculture.

Agriculture Ministers in the European Union this week (25.10.06) authorised a new Directive governing the health of farmed fish and shellfish.

New regulations will emphasise disease prevention measures, at each point in the production chain.

The EU aquaculture sector has a production value of appx. EU 2.6-million p.a. (A$3.42-million; Decrates).
