Elizabeth Taylor has died in Los Angeles aged 79.
Born in England, she was taken to Hollywood as an infant.
Her beauty highlighted by startling violet-blue eyes she began a long acting career as a child star.
She was given a British national honour, called Dame (DBE), and acclaimed as a highly talented actress, especially for two salutary films of psychological tension.
Her performance in the 1966 film Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (see still), a masterful rendition of the Edward Albee play, co-starring with her then-husband Richard Burton, achieved the second of two Oscars.
The first Oscar was for Biutterfield 8 in 1960.
