An Australian Special Forces soldier, Trooper Jason Thomas Brown, was killed on Friday (13.8.10) in Northern Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
He was evacuated after being shot during a contact with Taliban insurgents, but died from his wounds.
Trooper Brown, 29, became the eighteenth Australian to die during the present Afghanistan commitment.
Based with the Special Air Service in Perth, he’d been in the Army for ten years and was on his first deployment to Afghanistan.
His death occurred just over one week before elections in Australia.
Both government and Opposition spokespersons expressed regret for the loss of life while reaffirming support for the military campaign to continue.
