New EU Pacific Cooperation

tahiti1.jpgThe European Union and partner countries in the Pacific region have finalised arrangements for three regional development aid projects attracting a total of €22-million (A$32.8-million; dcerates.com 10.3.10) from Europe.

The projects under the EU’s African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) program are aimed at promoting sustainable management and use of marine resources in the pacific.

They are:

Scientific Support for the Management of Coastal and Oceanic Fisheries in the Pacific Islands Regions, for conservation and sustainable use of coastal and fisheries resources;

Development of Sustainable Tuna Fisheries, aiming to assist with poverty alleviation in the Pacific;

Deep Sea Minerals in the Pacific Islands Region, a scheme to strengthen Pacific planning and management systems for deep-sea minerals.
