Bringing together of “European Socceroos†at Sydney (1.4.09) secured a 2-1 defeat of Uzbekistan, positioning the Australians to be first qualifiers for next year’s World Cup Football finals in South Africa.
The city brought out a growingly impatient crowd of 57 000, watching waves of attacks on the visitors’ goal until Josh Kennedy scored with a header in the 67th minute.
Harry Kewell kicked a penalty for the second goal.
Uzbekistan held off the assault in heavy rain, a souvenir for players hailing from one of the world’s driest countries.
Australia, undefeated at the head of its group would go into the World Cup finals, if a match next day between Bahrain and Qatar should be drawn, or if the team managed a draw or better in one of tits remaining three matches – two to be played at home.
A luxurious choice for the coaching team now: whether, or how much to use the star players in the national team, in the final lead-up to the Cup.
The Socceroos successfully draw on a contingent of professional players, though far from the biggest in terms of national profiles, in the European leagues.
